I’m taking full advantage of the long Memorial Day weekend by heading to the mountains to relax and recharge. When I travel, there are a handful of items I always bring with me—sunscreen, stylish pajamas and an instant camera for capturing memories—but Memorial Day also requires a few key summer pieces, like a cute retro swimsuit and matching sandals. Since I’ll be spending time outdoors, comfortable hiking outfits are also a must. Here’s my Memorial Day weekend packing list for my mountain getaway.
My Memorial Day Weekend packing list
Stylish luggage
I’m notorious for overpacking, but with the roomy Aviator Carry-On and Main Line Duffel from Paravel, I can fit everything I need in two manageable bags. For me, that’s really good for a three-day trip. I love that the carry-on has an interior compression board, straps and zip pockets to help me stay organized.

Retro swimsuit
For a mountain getaway, I need a swimsuit that’s equally suitable for swimming holes, river tubing and relaxing in the hot tub post-hike. My high-rise gingham bikini from Albion Fit has a cute, retro pattern with a fit that feels secure. The style I have is no longer available, but J. Crew has a similiar style here.
Comfortable hiking shorts
When I’m planning a trip to the mountains, the first thing I pack is comfortable hiking outfits. I recently purchased a pair of Baleaf 5″ Atheltic Shorts and am so pleased with the fit. They have just the right length and rise, are comfortable and lightweight, have multiple pockets and are made of a quick-drying material that also makes them suitable for water activities.
Top with UPF
One of the activities on our agenda for the weekend is to go river tubing. Since I sunburn so easily, I’m planning to bring a top that has built-in sun protection, like the Athleta Pacifica Illume UPF Fitted Top. Along with applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, this will keep my fair skin from burning while I’m floating.
Vintage-inspired sandals
For exploring small towns nearby, I’m packing some vintage-inspired sandals that I can wear with shorts or dresses. The BAIT Footwear Emilia Sandals have the cutest 1940s-inspired butterfly cutouts. I bought a white pair to match with more summer outfits. I also love the Memery Sidse Sandal for the cushioned platform and fun color options.
Classic sneakers
Since this weekend trip is more about enjoying the outdoors and less about cocktail bars, I’m packing a few pairs of sensible shoes. In addition to my hiking boots and sandals, I’m packing my Keds Women’s Champion Sneakers. I have them in three different colors and wear them constantly. The classic style works with jeans, shorts and even dresses.
Instant film camera
Every trip I go on, I take my Fujifilm INSTAX Wide Camera and extra film. I like documenting special locations and adding photos to an album as travel keepsakes. It’s fun to leave the camera out in the common area during the night and see what kinds of photos different people take, and everyone gets to take a few photos home with them as souvenirs.
Skincare with SPF
I always make sure to pack skincare with SPF to protect my skin during the day while hiking, swimming and sightseeing. My favorite is La Roche-Posay Toleraine Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV. It has SPF 30, which is the minimum SPF level recommended by dermatologists. I also never leave home without a face cleanser for sensitive skin, my favorite eye makeup remover and a good moisturizing cream to hydrate my skin at night.
Cute pajamas
Last but not least, I’m bringing cute pajama sets for wearing during downtime in the cabin. My favorite is a set of Paglamas by Jennafer Grace made with a mid-century-inspired fabric. I also have a more casual Calvin Klein T-Shirt & Shorts Sleep Set for warmer nights.
