Summer is the perfect time to try out pretty vintage summer beauty trends, like fun updo hairstyles and vibrant lip colors. This glossy dark fuchsia lip look is inspired by lipstick trends from the early 1950s and is a gorgeous makeup style for summer weddings, rooftop parties or any occasion. Dark fuchsia lips are a little vampy, super glossy and totally glamorous. When you don’t feel like red lipstick is the right match for your outfit, give this colorful lip look a try.
Initially, I was going to try a lighter look by layering a semi-sheer mauve gloss over a mauve lipstick. Something made me want to apply a dark lip liner underneath first and I’m so happy with the results. As a lover of all things vintage makeup and style, a classic red lip is typically my preference, but these glossy dark fuchsia lips have me rethinking my love for red lipstick.
I think his mauve-fuchsia lip combination would be flattering on so many different skin tones. Here’s how to get the look:
Products for Glossy Dark Fuchsia Lips
Before applying any lip color, I first prepped my lips with the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in ‘Vanilla.’ I applied a small amount so the lip liner would still be able to sink into my lips and stay put. Then, I applied three products to achieve this look, in this order:
- One/Size Lip Filler Precision Lip Liner in ‘Code Word’
- Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in ‘On the Mauve’
- Tower 28 Beauty ShineOn Milky Lip Jelly in ‘Sesame’
How to Get Glossy Dark Fuchsia Lips
1. Line and fill in your lips with a dark berry lip liner
Start by applying a dark plum, berry or fuchsia lip liner. Line your lips with the pencil liner then completely fill in your lips with the liner. This will help your lipstick last longer. For this look, I used the One/Size Lip Filler Precision Lip Liner in Code Word, which is described as a “soft matte berry.” One/Size Lip Filler Precision Lip Liner in ‘Code Word,’ $14 at Sephora
Side note: This lip liner shade is a very close match to Bésame Cosmetics ‘Wild Orchid’ Lipstick, a “cool, fuchsia-purple” inspired by lipstick trends of the early 1950s. If you have that shade I think this liner would be a great option to pair with it.
2. Apply a creamy mauve lipstick
Next, apply a mauve lipstick over the lip liner. You can use a light, more sheer formula or a darker, more pigmented mauve, depending on how dramatic you want your look to be. Either way, I suggest using a creamy lipstick so you get maximum shine, like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in ‘On the Mauve,’ $5.96 on Amazon
3. Top with a mauve gloss
Lastly, top the lipstick with a mauve gloss. I really like the Tower 28 Beauty ShineOn Milky Lip Jelly in the shade ‘Sesame.’ It’s gorgeous on it’s own and I also like to layer it on top of mauve or dusty rose lipstick shades. You can use any gloss for this look, even clear, but I find this mauve shade adds more gorgeous color for a stunning final result. Tower 28 Beauty ShineOn Milky Lip Jelly in ‘Sesame,’ $16 at Tower 28
