Summer may be nearly over, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about protecting our skin from sun damage. I keep skincare and makeup with SPF in my beauty routine year-round! As someone with very fair skin, it’s important to me to wear SPF products every single day. Wearing a face moisturizer with SPF every day not only reduces the risk of skin cancer, but also helps prevent visible signs of sun damage. In addition to moisturizer, I also wear tinted moisturizer and cosmetics with SPF.
When I first started wearing face moisturizer, I used a moisturizer with SPF 15. Then I read that you really need an SPF—or “sun protection factor”—of at least 30 for it to be truly effective, something my dermatologist would also tell me years later. I promptly switched to Olay Daily Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin with SPF 30.
Since then, I’ve tried many moisturizers with SPF and have also begun to use makeup with SPF. Cosmetics tend to have SPF 15, which is on the low side, but I figure that it can’t hurt to add it on top of the SPF I’m already wearing. Remember, wearing two products with SPF 15 does not equal the protection level of a product with SPF 30; it means you’re only wearing SPF 15.
In addition to wearing a product with SPF 30 every day, I also have a yearly checkup with my dermatologist to make sure the freckles and moles I have are healthy. I urge you to do the same and to wear SPF 30 every day! And yes, you can still get sun damage even when it’s cloudy outside.
This post includes my favorite face moisturizers with SPF, but you can see my favorite sunscreens in this post on how to rock your pale skin. Here are the skincare and makeup products with SPF that I use most often:
Face Moisturizer with SPF
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer SPF 30
This is the face moisturizer with SPF that I keep coming back to again and again. Moisturizers in general, and especially those with SPF, have the potential to look greasy on my naturally oily skin. My skin feels moisturized, but not overly so, after using this La Roche-Posay moisturizer. It’s oil free, fragrance free and doesn’t feel thick and heavy like some creams can. It’s also fairly easy on the budget at right under $20, and I can usually use an Ulta coupon on it.
CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM SPF 30
If I’m out of moisturizer and can’t get to Ulta, I occasionally revert to this CeraVe moisturizer that’s available at most drugstores, grocery stores and retail store like Target, as well as online. I have oily, sensitive skin that breaks out frequently, sometimes for no obvious reason. This CeraVe moisturizer is oil free, fragrance free and doesn’t irritate my skin, plus it has the recommended SPF 30.
One I want to try: Many high-end skincare brands make moisturizers with SPF, but as you can see, I tend to use products that I can find at the drugstore or Ulta. One product that’s recommended a lot is EltaMD UV Daily Face Sunscreen Moisturizer, which I have only seen available online. If I ever do try a high-end product, I’ll be sure to add my thoughts to this post!
Tinted Moisturizer with SPF
The Balm BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer SPF 18
I wanted something that wasn’t as heavy as foundation to wear during summer that would even out my skin tone. The Balm was having a sale so I ordered the BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer in the shade Lighter Than Light. It really is just barely tinted but provides better coverage once I apply a setting powder over it. There are days I don’t leave the house because of the pandemic but I wear this if I have Zoom meetings; however, if I’m going outside I wear it over an SPF 30.
One I want to try: BareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder is my favorite face powder, and when BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream first came out, I heard nothing but good things. It also has SPF 30, which offers more protection than The Balm’s tinted moisturizer. I also recently became aware of ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40, an even higher SPF. I’ve been looking for more clean beauty products and have really liked the ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara, so the Skin Tint is on my list to try.
Foundation with SPF
Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear 24h Foundation SPF 15
While I don’t buy high-end skincare items, I do splurge on makeup, depending on the product. Finding a foundation in the right shade that lasts all day but won’t get cakey or splotchy can take time, so I allow myself to spend more when I find one I really like. Lancôme Teint Idole really does last all day and has a beautiful finish that isn’t powdery or cakey. I use the shade 095 Ivoire Warm. Since it does only have SPF 15, I wear a moisturizer with SPF 30 under it.
One I want to try: As much as I enjoy winged eyeliner and red lipstick, some days I want a more subtle makeup look. I’ve been wanting to try Perricone MD No Makeup Foundation Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 20 for a while but I have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to my makeup budget. While I’ve heard great reviews for this foundation, I can’t ignore the $60 price tag. Let me know if you love it and it’s worth it!
