Audrey Hepburn’s outfits in the classic 1961 film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, are arguably some of the most copied fashion looks in history, for both photo shoots and everyday style inspiration. Equally idolized, for good reason, are her iconic makeup looks as society girl Holly Golightly. To celebrate National Lipstick Day on July 29, I wanted to learn more about Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s lipstick. The color Hepburn’s character uses in the movie is a beautiful salmon pink shade that’s the ideal part of any 1960s makeup look. However, the pretty pink lipstick Hepburn wears is somewhat of a mystery.

What lipstick does Audrey Hepburn wear in Breakfast at Tiffany’s?

In one scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Hepburn sits in the back of a taxi, holding a mirror in one hand and a tube of lipstick in the other. The color she wears is a gorgeous salmon pink shade that fits with her glam early 1960s style. There’s some debate over whether the shade she applies is, as beauty sleuths have thought for a while, Revlon “Pink in the Afternoon.” When someone posted the question on Revlon’s Facebook page, Revlon answered the comment, declaring that “the rumors are true.”

We may never really know the true Breakfast at Tiffany’s lipstick, but it looks like this Revlon shade is a pretty close match if it’s not exact. The modern equivalent of the lipstick is Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in the shade “Pink in the Afternooon” (shade 415).

What color is Revlon Pink in the Afternoon?

Revlon describes “Pink in the Afternoon” as a “creamy pink-peach.” I purchased a tube of the lipstick to try and I would say that color description is accurate. Of course, as with any lipstick, this color can look different on different skin tones.

I really like the way it looks on my fair skin. The texture is creamy and non-drying, and the color is a flattering shade that sits perfectly between pink and peach, neither too bright nor too pale. It works beautifully for day, but can also be worn at night with a dramatic eye look. Hepburn wears the shade (or a similar one) with a smoky brown eye and winged liner in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Is Revlon Pink in the Afternoon discontinued?

I’ll admit, this color was difficult to find. My quest for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s lipstick began with a search on the Revlon website, which showed it was out of stock. Though it is available on ulta.com, it was not available for pickup at any of the Ulta stores near my house. Then I tried Walgreens, but the lipstick didn’t come up when I searched the website. Finally, I tried another drugstore, CVS, and was able to pick up a tube at a location near my house. I did not look at the grocery stores near me, but you may be able to find it at a Publix, Kroger or other grocery store that carries cosmetics. The shade is also available on amazon.com.
