Spooky season is upon us! What better way to celebrate the most creative time of year than by playing with the best eyeshadow palettes for Halloween? Part of the fun when putting together the perfect Halloween costume is the makeup, after all. These eyeshadow palettes will help you morph into an enchanting siren, a dark and mysterious temptress and many more Halloween makeup looks.

My favorite Halloween movie is, without a doubt, Hocus Pocus, so I’m eager to get my hands on the ColourPop Hocus Pocus Gather Round Sisters Palette. It’s a new Halloween makeup palette inspired by the colors of garments worn by the Sanderson sisters in the film. Until I try it out, here are some of my favorite eyeshadow palettes plus other options for getting creative with Halloween makeup.

Eyeshadow palettes for mermaid makeup

Channel a sea siren this Halloween with fun turquoise eye makeup. The ColourPop High Tide Eyeshadow Palette has nine beautiful shades that range from pastel to deep sea aqua. The pigmentation is great on these shadows and they’re easy to blend. However, these colors aren’t limited only to mermaids. This palette can be used for a lot of pretty Halloween makeup looks, including many 1960s costumes.

Halloween makeup ideas using turquoise eyeshadow:

  • A mermaid
  • A blue fairy
  • Ice queen
  • Retro Barbie
  • Elaine from The Love Witch
  • Endora from Bewitched
  • Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra
  • Twiggy

Red and orange eyeshadow palettes

Orange eyeshadow can give a subtle nod to Halloween if you’re not feeling a full costume. You can also use an orange eyeshadow palette for a pumpkin or cute candy corn costume, or pair it with red lipstick for a fiery devil costume. Last year, I did a devil-inspired makeup look using orange shades from the Beauty Bakerie Proof Is In The Puddin’ Eyeshadow Palette with Colourpop BFF Liquid Liner in Try Me (bright red).

Halloween makeup ideas using orange eyeshadow:

  • A Jack-o-lantern
  • “Pumpkin spice”
  • Candy corn
  • Monarch butterfly
  • Scarecrow
  • Lion or tiger
  • Devil (with red makeup)

Smokey eyeshadow palettes

Going for a dark and spooky look? A smokey eyeshadow palette will help you transform into Morticia Addams, Elvira, a member of the Volturi or one of your other favorite vampy icons. Choose a palette that offers high contrast in shades, like the Lancome Color Design Eyeshadow Palette in Smokey Chic. To add color, rich plums and deep browns and reds can also create a stunning smokey eye.

Halloween makeup ideas using smokey eyeshadow:

  • Morticia Addams
  • Elvira
  • Vampire
  • Witch
  • Silent film star
  • Corpse bride
  • Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice
  • Nina from The Black Swan
  • Cruella de Vil

Eyeshadow palettes for flapper makeup

Being the vintage fashion lover that I am, I’ll take any excuse to dress up in a glamorous 1920s outfit. This is also an easy Halloween costume to put together and the right makeup can take it to the next level. For flapper makeup, I usually use an eyeshadow palette with a good mix of neutral, dark and shimmer shades, like the Lorac Pro Palette Noir or the Lorac Pro Palette Artist Edition – Meraki. I would use the lighter colors as transition and highlight shades. The black, dark brown and burgundy shades would work wonderfully for 1920s-inspired eye makeup. Lastly, use the shimmer shades to add sparkle to your 1920s party makeup look.

Customizable eyeshadow palettes

If you have a very specific look in mind, building your own custom palette might be the best option. An eyeshadow palette I use daily is the Buxom Customizable Eyeshadow Palette. The refillable palette holds six eyeshadow bars and there’s a good range of colors to choose from. Plus, the eyeshadow bars hold more product than most other palettes so this one is a great value. This palette also has a large mirror and a small brush included, so it’s ideal for on-the-go touch-ups.
